Just verified that my Baofeng and Woaxan handheld 2M units also can use the GMRS freq's. Just an FYI.

Huge thanks to Midland for the hookup. So I had the MXT 275 in the Taco. It was wired so that the truck had to be on in order for it to turn on. But one thing I hated was that when you turned off the truck and then turned it back on, you had to then turn on the radio. Many times I forgot. Anyhow, they came out with a new replacement mic which added noise cancellation as well as a knob to adjust the volume and turn on power. So you could leave the knob at preset value and when you turned the truck on it turned on the radio. Well it would not work with my 275. I contacted Midland and asked for advice. It took them about 4 days to reply. In the 4 days timeframe I went ahead and requested a return to Amadong... and then I also saw the 575 on sale so I picked it up. Well Amadong sent me 2 mics... I returned one (note that neither of the two they had sent would power on my 275). But the mic did work great with my new 575. Now Midland emailed me, said they had sent the issue to their engineering dept. I replied and said "Don't worry about it... I bought a new 575 and the mic works fine, must be an issue with the 275". They then asked me for a copy of my receipt and my mailing address. 2 days later I get a new 275 and a new mic in the mail. So now I have 2 275's and 2 new mics. :) I've only opened one of the mics up (the one from Midland is still sealed) but it does power up the new 275. So score there. Might put one in the trailer. Not sure yet.

+1 for putting one in the trailer. Then an antenna that can be raised up a bit above the tent to take advantage of some range. This is my current thought process if I replace the 275 in my 4Runner with a 575.

So far, I have been very happy with the $70.00 Baofeng.. Bought it in 2021, still working well. Do you notice a significant greater range with the radio than a handheld Sean?

Last time I used the 15 watt Midland (Hill country trip back in May) my signal was way better than those with handhelds. There was one other guy with a similar setup and he was in the very back of the pack (probably 10-12 vehicles). He was one of the only people I could hear without issue. Actually at lunch is when I talked to him and asked what he was using since he was so far back and I could hear him perfectly. Was kinda funny because he had the same question for me. Turns out we had the same setup, well he was using the ghost antenna and I was using a short (30" or so) one. I think the big factor is getting the antenna out of the cab.

As a backup I've got one of those 8 watt Baofengs as well, its nice, just not as intuitive to setup the channels. IIRC it does not have "Channel 15" the same as the other handheld GMRS only radios. You need to know the freq of channel 15 to talk to the others. The Midland is pretty idiot proof :) Even I can use it.

Speaking of freqs... here they are.

Oh and speaking of the Baofengs, download the owners manual of the model you have and save it to your phone or tablet. Can come in handy when in the middle of nowhere and you accidentally change your language setting to Chinese. Ask Roger and I how we know. LOL

Yeah, I have used different handhelds vs a good truck mounted radio & antenna. The results of getting the extra broadcast power and the antenna out of the cabin and above the body is a big difference.

When we did a group run up to CrossBar in Oklahoma the rigs with mounted antennas could talk pretty much the whole time. The handhelds had issues with terrain and distance as a result.

But I will always travel with a Baofeng as a backup and also emergency HAM access.

Good to know. FYI, you know you can program the Baofeng to show the Channel numberrs right?

I guess I will keep my eye open for a killer deal on a Truck mounted one like Midland. On a side note, one of the guys was running this one, and it sounded great. He said it was a Baofeng clone with more power. QYT-8900
