Let's talk longish range bolt guns that are lightweight and for hunting.
After I get my AR built I want a semi custom bolt gun. I have 2 that use now and cover pretty much everything. 243 Ruger Mark II with wood stock. Other is a 30-06 Ruger Hawkeye in synthetic stainless.
I want something I can carry around, that's rugged, and able to reach out. Caliber has been a huge debate for me.
I had a .280 in the past and loved that caliber so that's on my list. So is a 7 mag due to being available in many platforms.
I have thought about the Nosler M48 rifle, Remington 700 mountain and fluting the bolt and drop in a nice trigger.
Let's hear some thoughts on caliber and rifle platforms.
Hunting rifle that can be versatile and is a little swanky is what I am after.
Hate to say it but unless you find an old Remingtotn for sale, I would stay away from the new ones as they rust out in a year. Berga has stepped up to fill the gap that Remington left behind, so I'd recommend Berga.

By "reach out", how far do you want to go? What's your yardsge limit for an ethical kill?

I would say 500 yards is where I would like to be at.
As far as rust goes I will probably cerakote whatever I get.

I have slightly considered the 6.5 but I'm having a hard time getting on the band wagon and accepting the round for anything more than a paper puncher.

Well if the 308 round was designed for the military to kill, the 6.5 essential has the same energy at 500yds, less drop and more velocity, it will kill.

I'm fully aware a smaller caliber is capable of taking Texas deer. My 243 is nick named The Grocery Getter. It's my first choice when grabbing a rifle out of the safe. However I know its not ideal for everything and want something a little different than my 30-06.
280 rem, 280 Ackley Improved, 7mag, 300 win mag, and 338 have all got my attention.
Realistically I'm considering the 280 rem and 7mag.
Something that is a little on the light weight side that I can lug around for sheep, elk, caribou, mule deer and northern white tail.

I know you're fully aware, just showing you different options. I'd probably lean towards 300 Win Mag in that case. 7mm is also a good choice too.

.338 is too damn expensive for me...

Well he is from California... and a Democrap. So yeah, he's dumb as a fence post. At least a fence post has a use though... this guy.. well his mom should have just swallowed him.

Those idiots forget that gubment is made up of citizens. It's not like crossing a union picket line when you decide to start beating down your neighbors doors to grab their guns. Little different when you turn against and your own is what I'm saying.

I selected 7mm Rem Mag for my primary hunting rifle. A little big for whitetail, but not too big. Also good for larger animals. I've killed a Greater Kudu, Waterbuck and Blue Wildabeast with a 7mm Rem Mag along with many other species.

Thanks. I am leaning more to a 7 mag at the moment. Been doing a lot of comparing with rounds. I really like the 28 Nosler round but ammo availability, limited rifle choices and being stupid expensive rounds I will pass.

That is sweet! I'm bookmarking it for later.

I do need to buy a new charging handle though, Santa is bringing me an Aero Precision 10.5" upper with their Atlas S-One handguard in 5.56. Already have a SB Tactical SBA-3 pistol brace on hand. Today I went to my LGS and ordered a matching lower for it. Just need to order a trigger (need to check BF ads.. might get lucky) and some other misc stuff for it.
