FWIW, Smittybilt is crap! If its something that can kill me if it fails, I don't want the cheapest I can find. Now I doubt they will snap in two, but I'm not gonna risk it. I love the description of the Smitybilt shackle "made from strong material".. no shit!

Thanks for all of these links guys. I need to pick up a few shackles and straps. I assume it is not worth the $$ to buy the ARB straps right? Tractor Supply or Amazon is fine? How many pounds should a good strap be ratted for?

ARB says "The 17,500 lb model is recommended for most 4WD vehicles". I'd say it will definitely work for the Creampuff.

For straps, ARB's new ones are awesome. They stretch nicely and are very durable. I'd recommend them any day. The older blue ARB straps weren't the greatest and got some bad press as not stretching that much. The new ones do not have that issue. Stay away from any strap with a hook attached to it.

If you don't want to spend $60+ on a strap, check out the straps from Wheelers Offroad. A little cheaper, but a little too thick IMO. For our sized rigs,a 2" strap is plenty, allows the strap to stretch and "snatch" the vehicle. If you want to use the strap as more of a winch extension then the stiffer 3" are better... even better are the straps designed to be winch extensions.

FWIW, I have a 2" and a 3" ARB orange strap. I've always used the 2" version. I only recently used the 3" strap... and even then it was just as a tow strap... not for a recovery :)

The TSC shackles are very nice. I have 4 of them and they all still in great shape. FYI, you should only tighten a shackle with your hands. If you have to use a tool to loosen it then the shackle has issues and should not be used.

Thats the 2" version... its the one I use 99.9% of the time.

I guess the hook is pointless if I get my CBI bumper mounted. I am shooting for the weekend of Dec 4th to do the rear bumper.

Not necessarily, its nice to have a recovery point that spreads the load evenly between both frame rails.

I'd really like to get one of those kinetic energy dispersion straps that is intended to be snatched from a running start and have significant stretch to pull the vehicle out. Like the ones they used on the Top Gear episode up in the arctic

Dan at Wheelers had a sale at the beginning of the year for straps they had in overstock. I got a 27k# 30' and same load 12' tree strap for about $50-60 if my memory serves me correctly. My old 30' 30k strap was beat to shit and frayed all over so I jumped on it.

I got my receiver shackle from Harbor Freight for $12.00. It said it was good for 10k# but looks like shit and is super small compared to others out there. It never failed on me, but I wouldn't recommend it.
