You mean the bearing preload? an in/lbs torque wrench (of the non clicking variety) is what I use to set things with rotational yield. Its what I used to set the diffs i've assembled.

Yes, but on a birf you have to use a fish scale

Well you should be able to get it together Todd. You got mad skillz. :) But its not that bad.. yes it sucks and its messy. But going together was easier than pulling apart. Just be sure to use a fish scale and get the drag correct. I had to mess with that a few times to get it right. Didn't take too long, just one thing that I was told to get right by an old Land Cruiser guy.

I'm assuming you are referring to the trunion bearings for the pull scale?
Thats the only thing I didn't replace, didn't see that far enough in advance so they are staying as is for now.
Wheel bearings are torqued as far as I know.

Ah, OK.
Don't have a scale but I've done plenty of wheel bearings, I'm sure the scale is the most accurate way to set bearing load but I'll give it a shot the old fashion way.

Plus, there's only so many combinations of shims.

Shims? WTF are you talking about

Shims are for the trunion bearings, and they did come in the kit from TG (shims and bearings). According to the directions, you need to put the same number and thickness shims you pulled out back in.

Don't do like I did and drop them.. wasn't sure how many where on top and how many where on bottom. Doh!

They are used to adjust the 'tightness' of the knuckle (how easy it is for the knuckle to turn).

I built a front end from scratch - and to be absolutely centered, I guess we would need an alignment too to make sure the center of the hub is 'centered.' :D

The Toyota Knuckle Alignment Tool is finally here! It is important to know what shims to run when rebuilding your front knuckles, and this Special Service Tool from Toyota is the authentic way to get the job done. The shims control the alignment of your knuckle with your axle housing. If not shimmed properlly, then your birfields, inner axle seals, spindle bushings and locking hubs will be out of alignment and will experience excessive wear and may even bind. Don't let this happen to your investment! Take out all the guess work and save yourself time and money with this Genuine Toyota Service Tool.

Instructions are here

See above! ;)

Is this thing back together and ready for HF?

Truck did well at HF.
Got a few things to fix and lots to upgrade. Need to fix all the shock bushings, the fronts are gone, literally gone.
Gonna pull one of the rear leafs out, (its a half leaf going from the axle forward) gonna see if that makes a difference. I'm also going to figure out a better shackle for the rear springs, the ones that are on it are pretty janky.
Tube doors, after seeing how well the doors protected Sean when he flopped I think that was a good investment, they aren't too expensive either.
Flat bed is in the future, got a couple of pics that I like:

Is that missing shock bushing what was making the popping noise?

If you're going to replace the rear leafs, you might as well do the front too and lower the whole thing a few inches

Truck did great this weekend. Only place to go form here is up

I think the popping noise was one of his BIRFs
