While you have the engine out, go ahead and swap your steering rack bolts around. It will literally take you a minute to do at this point. Because if you have to rebuild/replace your steering rack in the future, you have to cut one of the bolts out to get the rack out. BUT if you flip the bolts right now, you won't have to in the future.

You still have time! lol

When I was looking for the old pictures for my build I came across the flip flop pic and chuckled. I'd slap the Jesus out of one of my guys if I saw that here...of course all my guys would sue of they got hurt so that explains that.

Thanks for the tip! I like that because I'm not so certain my racks in good shape.

I also need to redo any added wiring I did back in the day. Nothing like having hot wires unprotected to short something out lol

I installed poly bushings on my steering rack along with new inner and outer tie rods. My truck drives like brand new. It's sooooooo nice.
Steering Rack Bushing Kit for 2005-2015 Tacoma 4x4 and PreRunner

Funny you posted this - I spent last night looking into cab and rad mount bushings. Mine are toast. I have a 3 page list of things that need to be done/parts ordered and in the effort to be efficient/save time & money I wanted to pull the trigger on all the parts I need in one swoop. Problem is I don't want to put out a ton of cash on parts until I know the new/used engine's going to work after letting it sit for 3+ years in my shed.

Just ordered a ton of stuff last night from Camelback & Dallas Yota so I can get the engine bay 100%. Once thats running Ill start pulling the triger on all the other stuff (rotors/brake pads/etc.).

In true Roger and TOR style I will hijack... I have a NIB TOYOTA rack I need to put it my truck soon. :)

My rack leaked once then fixed itself. We shall see what new gremlins pop up after being dormant for so long.

just got off the phone w/Wheeler's and I hope they ship my new steering rack bushings today so I can put the engine in this coming weekend. Said they would...time will tell. Orders been in since last Thursday w/no updates besides when I called today.

Cleaned out 10 years worth of mouse droppings from my cowl & HVAC system. Also washed the truck good. Weather was too crappy to be painting and reforming rust Saturday.

One last box should be on my door step tonight from Yota for bolts that were to far gone from salt to try and make work again.

Got the engine bay clean as I'm gonna get it. This weekend engine goes in. Just got some rust to reform and steering rack bushings to swap before then.

After 3 years of sitting the mouse house "was" in full effect...no more

Hell ya! So question, what is that bottom photo of? With the screen on top of an opening?

That's where the HVAC pulls in outside air. Without the screen all sorts of debris and critters get inside there. It's on the passenger side under the hood/wiper cowl.

This.... When I can find some time after the engine is in I'm also going to throw some flashing over it so rain never drips on my PS floor ever again. With my cowl filled to the brim with 10 years worth of mouse crap and organic matter it started leaking onto my floor mats. No idea if cleaning solved that yet, but it's coming down hard here now so Ill check when I get home. Regardless I'm going to fix it so that never happens again. Cowls easy to check - just 2 plastic body Phillips head clips on each end then the rest are pull type clips you can just yank on carefully.

On another note I spent almost an hr washing out my radiators from the engine bay spraying forward yesterday. There must have been 5# of mud and crap in it. When I got most of the mud out I degreased it and was amazed at all the oil that came out of it from driving. Flooded out my backyard lol

Thats why the swap is taking me so long since I started it. Basically washing down every inch of the front of the truck with a tooth brush, noting any parts that need to be replaced/refurbished, then either buying new or refurbishing the old. My hands are FUBAR from all the parts cleaner/washing/rust reforming/degreasing. Think I have two days into stripping rust/priming/painting screws and bolts lol

At least you're doing it right the first time...

It is not a war crime the first time.

Which will be peace of mind and more time smiling later. I try to remind myself to slow down and do it right the first time. I do not have enough spare time and money to do it twice.

Problem with taking your time is all the things I am finding. Almost wish I was doing this with blinders on. Stress cracks (plural) up front in the fender support area has me angry I never kept an eye on my body mount bushings or their torque.
