I believe it was 2003 when they went to the new bodystyle.

Edit: Did a Googke image search for 2003 4runner interior and that appears to be the first year they changed.

I mean the one that's still a lever, but has a button on the side of it. I've seen '95s with them.

According to Wikipedia, it was in '88 and only on the V6 models. It's a chain drive instead of gear drive.
